The title and phrase used to complete this language based piece of work comes from a childhood memory Susan has of her grandfather. Reminiscent of times gone by this phrase, not often used today is a reminder of the optimist in all of us to 'look on the brighter side of life'. Created using a pencil outline and utilising a colour code, the rhythm and repetition within the work can be seen here where the phrase is repeated.

Reminiscent of aspects of modern technology such as QR codes, this painting explores the influence of modern technology within art.

Created in 2016 as part of a series this piece measures 50 inches x 50 inches, incorporating pencil, acrylic, gouache and white gold leaf on paper.

"May you be well, may you be happy, may you be free from suffering” is a mantra stemming from the Buddhist meditation of ‘Metta Bhavana’ or ‘loving kindness’. The rhythm and repetition of the words can be seen here represented by the resulting pattern. Each letter of the mantra phrase is replaced by a corresponding colour creating a symphony of colour and movement.

Never say never again is a language based painting stemming from a memorable childhood phrase. The letters of the phrase and title are replaced by corresponding colours from a self created code. The phrase is then repeated throughout the picture and slowly replaced by colour to reveal the resulting pattern.

This painting stems from an investigation into movement. Using a predominantly monochrome palette this work has been constructed first in pencil on paper and then painted using gouache. The opposing forces here can be seen within the concentric circles and directional movement of the stripes against the flowing background.

'Think' is part of an ongoing series of language based work utilising a system or code of colour that is then applied to a repeated phrase to create rhythm or movement.

In this piece there is an area of overlapping, decreasing colour dots on the surface, similar to a musical 'round' where different parts merge. This produces a strong optical effect or vibration of colour when viewing this work.

This small monochrome painting is part of a series of three exploring movement. The base image was drawn in pencil onto a paper surface, after which gouache paint was applied in an alternating pattern. The directional flow of the individual segments differ in addition to the size increasing and decreasing offering the illusion of further depth within this work.

'Faith' is part of a series exploring different feelings and emotions. An intuitive colour palette has been chosen with 'faith' in mind. The pencil line grid structure was firstly drawn on to the surface of the paper before paint was applied in a meticulous yet random manner, using self imposed rules to direct the progression of the piece.

'The path of least resistance' was completed as part of an investigation into neural pathways within the human brain and led to a collaboration with The Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre.

This particular piece was drawn onto paper with pencil in a freehand, organic manner starting from one mark which then grew outwards.

Once the pencil drawing was completed, paint was carefully added. A series of self imposed rules or systems were followed to create this piece and a monochrome colour palette selected.

Created in 2014 and awarded the ING Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary Runner Up Prize, this piece was created predominantly exploring movement.

This large scale drawing/painting was first drawn in pencil on paper and then alternating stripes were painted with grey acrylic paint. The result is an optically challenging painting that pushes and pulls inwards and outwards from the centre in a wave like pattern. Due to the scale of this work it becomes a truly immersive experience when looking at this piece.

This painting explores further the theme of language and has been created using a colour code system that replaces the title phrase. Repetition of the phrase within this piece gives an overall sense of rhythm and reveals the hypnotic resulting pattern. The system is flipped and reversed along the centre of this work creating a wonderful ‘stitching’ effect from the interchange of colours.

This painting has been created with pencil, acrylic paint and gouache paint on paper, measuring 43 inches x 43 inches.
